Implementing ALL of the following solutions will provide single users will a solid level of Internet security:
- Anti-Virus
- Anti-Span
- Anti-Spyware
- Firewall
Important! Make sure all your security programs are up-to-date
There are hundreds of security software packages on the market, many of which include a comprehensive suite of Internet tools that offer protection from Spam, Viruses, Spyware and hackers.
Installing one of these comprehensive security software suites - from vendors such as Symantec, McAfee or Panda Software - will provide single PC users with a very strong level of Internet security that is capable of combating most Internet threats and attacks.
Most security software packages are subject to an end-user licence that typically covers single users for a period of 12 months. Users therefore need to ensure that licences are updated to ensure on-going protection.
Instead of opting for a complete security package you can protect your computer with individual anti-virus, anti-spam, anti-spyware and firewall programs, some examples of which are listed below. This approach can have cost benefits, as many of these are available for free or minimal cost, but you then need to ensure multiple programs are kept updated, rather than a single package. Also the free editions of these programs are usually only available to individuals, and are not licensed for commercial use.
If you are looking to protect a number of PCs on a local network then software based solutions may not be the most appropriate approach as licencing multiple PCs can be expensive and difficult to manage.
