So, we've compiled a list of truths for the most common misconceptions that we've heard surrounding the switch to full fibre, so that you have peace of mind when making the move yourself.

Fact: Full fibre broadband isn’t just for gamers!
Full fibre offers benefits for everyone, not just high-bandwidth gamers. Whether you stream shows, work from home, or simply browse the web, full fibre can be tailored to your needs with different speed levels. Plus, since it eliminates the older copper infrastructure, you can start with a lower-speed package and easily boost your speeds if your needs change.

Fact: Installation will require an internal home visit.
An internal home visit is an essential part of the installation process for full fibre broadband, but this is nothing to worry about! During the visit, the engineer will install the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) and connect your home to the fibre network.

This visit is also an opportunity for you to discuss where you’d like the ONT to be installed, though the final placement will depend on factors such as cable length and wall structure.

Fact: Installation is minimally invasive and tidy.
Openreach engineers usually need to drill just two small holes to install the ONT.

Fact: Installation is typically completed within 6–20 working days.
Most full fibre installations are completed in 6–20 working days. Depending on your property, the process may require one or two engineer visits.

  • First visit (if required): An external survey and preparation, where the fibre line is brought to the outside of your home.
  • Second visit: The internal installation, where the engineer connects the fibre line and installs the ONT inside your property.

This will be confirmed after receiving your order, so you’ll have a clear timeline.

Fact: Upgrading to full fibre delivers noticeable improvements in speed, reliability, and performance.
Full fibre offers faster speeds and greater reliability compared to traditional copper-based connections. You’ll experience smoother streaming, quicker downloads, better video call quality, and consistent performance—even during peak usage times.

With no copper elements in the infrastructure, full fibre also eliminates many common issues like interference and slowdowns due to distance from the exchange.

Bonus tip: In the rare instance your router stops working, full fibre allows you to stay online by directly connecting your device to the ONT using an ethernet cable (a PPPoE connection).

 

Fact: You may have flexibility with the placement of the new ONT.
Since full fibre is a new installation, the ONT doesn’t need to be in the same spot as your old one. If you’ve experienced poor Wi-Fi coverage, you can ask the engineer to install the ONT in a more central or convenient location, though placement depends on technical feasibility.
