Zen Internet, the UK’s largest B Corp certified internet service provider (ISP) and the only Which? Recommended Provider for Broadband can now offer full fibre broadband to another UK home every seven seconds.
Reflective of the nation’s demand, one in three Zen orders are for full fibre, with just over a third (33%) of the UK market now full fibre enabled. Of the Zen broadband customers that can access full fibre, 70% are getting ahead and taking advantage of the new technology by upgrading to the service. This is in contrast to the 23% average uptake as reported in BT Group’s latest quarterly results.
As an ultrafast broadband pioneer, Zen is following the Openreach and CityFibre infrastructure rollout to deliver full fibre broadband to consumers as soon as it is available, supporting the Government’s target to deliver nation-wide gigabit broadband by 2030.
What is full fibre?
Full fibre provides a more robust and reliable connection than traditional copper wires. It is the only truly fibre optic internet service available. Other ‘fibre’ products still use the traditional copper wires for delivering part of the connection. With copper, the signal strength can quickly degrade - the longer the wire to reach the home or business, the slower the broadband speed. While this is fine for phone calls, it can be a problem when it comes to downloading data and streaming movies. With much better reliability, and broadband speeds of up to 900Mbps, full fibre can facilitate all types of internet use.
With Zen’s full fibre 900, a 4GB HD movie can download in 38 seconds, for example, and a 60GB game in under 10 minutes, compared to just under an hour and just over 14 hours respectively for standard broadband delivered over the legacy copper infrastructure.
Standard broadband (10Mbps) | Full Fibre 900 | |
Download a HD TV show (600MB) | 8 minutes 23 seconds | 5 seconds |
Download a HD movie (4GB) | 57 minutes 15 seconds | 38 seconds |
Download a game (60GB) | 14 hours, 19 minutes | 9 minutes 32 seconds |
Upload a large file (1GB) | 2 hours 23 minutes | 9 seconds |
Paul Stobart, CEO at Zen Internet, said: “The rollout of full fibre is the last major infrastructure programme we will see in our lifetimes. At Zen, we are seeing significant demand from consumers for full fibre, with one in three new customers ordering from our ultrafast service portfolio.”
